The Galaxy Awaits | No Man’s Sky [VIDEO]

Square

No Man’s Sky has risen like a procedurally-generated phoenix from the ashes of its disastrous first release. Enjoy a drink with its own transformation inspired by No Man’s Sky with this curious colour-changing cocktail, featuring rum, mint, lychee and lime.

You’ll need:

  • 1 oz white rum
  • 1 oz lychee liqueur
  • 1 oz lime juice
  • 8-10 mint leaves
  • 2 tsp sugar
  • Crushed ice
  • Crushed butterfly flower tea ice
  • Soda water (optional)

Add the rum, lychee liqueur, mint leaves and sugar to a mixing glass. Muddle gently to release oils. Strain into a separate mixing glass filled with ice, and add the lime juice. Fill a tall glass (such as a Collins glass) to the 2/3rds point with crushed ice. Fill the rest of the way with butterfly flower tea ice. Strain your drink into this glass, watch the colour change, add a straw and serve!

“Linger here a while, Anomaly. The galaxy isn’t going anywhere.” – Unknown, to the player.

The release of No Man’s Sky was a trainwreck. There’s no way to get around that. Whether you think it’s because the developers were less than truthful about the features and quality of the game they were releasing, or that people were simply too hyped for the game to ever reach people’s expectations—I’ll leave that up to you. The fact remains that, whatever the reason, No Man’s Sky was and still is held up as an example of what not to do when releasing (or marketing) a game.

But the original release was years ago—and the game has changed. A lot. It has gone through a complete transformation, with new features and bug fixes and even entire expansions being added to the game—for free. In fact, I’d even say that it’s not just the game that it promised to be at the start, but better. Hello Games stuck with it, and you’ve got to commend them for that.

This transformation is what I drew on when putting together this drink. The whole shtick of No Man’s Sky is that it’s this big beautiful galaxy for players to explore, filled with wondrous sights, no single one of the the same. So I decided to do a similar thing for my drink: a beverage that has bright, vibrant colours—colours that change every time you go to take a sip.

The fact that it tastes pretty damn good too is a wonderful bonus.

The colour change is driven by the use of butterfly pea flower ice (the blue ice), which goes from blue to pink when it encounters acid—in this case, our lime juice. Because its frozen, the change doesn’t happen all at once, essentially layering the drink from pink to blue and transforming into more and more pink as time goes on.

Crafting this drink takes some effort and some patience, like all good things in life, but follow the recipe and you’ll end up with a bright, refreshing, slightly sweet drink that is perfect for a hot day on the deck.
