“Sometimes you’ve got to make sacrifices, Lara. And some of them are a little more literal than others.”—Roth

***SPOILER ALERT FOR ALL MODERN TOMB RAIDER GAMES***

Lara is a survivor. She’s been through tigers, tombs, undead creatures and curses, coming out the other side tougher than ever. She’s the embodiment of ‘what doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger’.

This is what the modern rebooted games were built around: the process of becoming the Tomb Raider we know and love, and the sacrifices required along the way.

Think about the first game, which painted Lara as a naive young woman with an itch for adventure—but by the end, she was a killer, her innocence given up in return for survival on the blood-soaked island.

The next game pitted Lara against a multinational organisation bent on uncovering immortality, no matter the cost. Again, Lara had to give up a piece of herself to succeed against Trinity: she became a modern-day Fury, hellbent on vengeance after the revelation of the true cause of her father’s death.

And then came Shadow of the Tomb Raider: a game which the developers themselves describe as being the story in which Lara matures fully into the Tomb Raider, capital letters and all. She no longer simply kills to survive—she hunts Trinity down like the God-Damned Batman.

This theme of sacrifice is what inspired this drink. The gin, lime juice and elderflower liqueur create a floral, sweet-and-sour concoction, light and carefree, like the Lara we met at the beginning of her journey. We then bloody it with grenadine, introducing a little more complexity and depth, presenting the Tomb Raider at the height of her Raider-yness.

Make it over plenty of ice to get that eerie blood-in-the-water effect and to call up the imagery of a Mayan sacrifice atop an altar—much like the finale of the final game.
