Rum, cherry, molasses and lime juice come together as a seemingly simple but utterly alien drink that’s sure to challenge your tastebuds.
You’ll need
- 2 oz (60ml) golden rum
- .75 oz (20ml) cherry-molasses simple syrup
- .50 oz (15ml) lime juice
Add all the ingredients to a shaker filled with ice. Shake thoroughly to chill. Strain into your chosen vessel. Serve!
How to make the cherry-molasses syrup
In a saucepan, combine 1/2 cup brown sugar and 1/2 cup of water. Heat gently (never boil) and stir until the sugar is completely dissolved. Add 2 tablespoons of blackstrap molasses. Stir again until dissolved. Finally, add a handful of chopped cherries to the mixture and simmer gently for 10 to 15 minutes until the flavours have combined. Taste regularly.
Allow to cool, then use in the recipe above.
“We want peace.”
Dark Ones
Dark Ones are decidedly enigmatic. They’re the boogey-men of the Metro world, featureless and alien. They are complete anathema to the survivors of the nuclear holocaust. But, should the player make the effort to reach out and prove themselves (and, by extension, the rest of humanity), you’ll discover that the Dark Ones are a lot more than they seem.
In this drink, I wanted to create something that was seemingly simple (only consisting of three primary ingredients), but with a hidden depth that would surprise the person that might otherwise dismiss it.
The rum presents some up-front fruit sweetness with a backing of oak, while the cherry-molasses syrup really dominates the flavour profile. It’s sweet, certainly, but with a distinct acidity and that unique blackstrap kick. Definitely a drink that lingers on the tongue – and, hopefully, in the mind.
Be warned though. The flavours in this are not for everyone. They’re big, they’re strange, and they’ll take you by surprise if you aren’t ready for them.
Here’s hoping you enjoy; cheers!
