Eridium | Borderlands

Square

A drink fit for alien royalty: smoky, fruity, and bright, glowing purple.

you’ll need

  • 1.5 oz (45ml) Lighthouse gin
  • .75 oz (20ml) blackberry liqueur
  • .50 oz (15ml) Ardbeg 10-year
  • .50 oz (15ml) lemon juice
  • .50 oz (15ml) simple syrup

Add all ingredients to a shaker filled with ice. Shake thoroughly until chilled. Strain into your chosen vessel. Wonder what kind of slag powers you’re going to get. Serve!

“An Eridium shard? Aw, fer — how many times I tell you idiots? You can’t get slag powers by swallowin’ this stuff!”

Dr Zed

Creating an Eridium-inspired drink is tricky. The strange, alien substance is a central part of the Borderlands story, but very little is actually known about its properties and nature—except that it’ll mutate the crap out of you if you spend too much time near it.

That’s not much to go on, but rather than shy away from the ‘weirdness’ and the ‘mystery’, I decided to double down on it: any drink inspired by Eridium has to be just as strange and surprising as the mineral itself.

It may look sweet and fruity and floral with its pretty purple hue, but take a sip and you get slapped in the mouth with hefty campfire smoke instead.

Don’t get me wrong, the combo of gin, lemon, simple syrup and blackberry liqueur certainly makes this a sweetish bevvy, but the real hero is the Ardbeg 10-year: a Islay single malt well-known for the potency of its smoke flavour. That’s what makes this drink unique, and what makes it distinctly ‘Eridium-y’.

It’s a shock to the senses upon first sip—smoke and berry and gin all mixing on the tongue. This may not be a drink that suits everyone’s palette but anyone who wants to try something new (or surprise their patrons) will find this becomes differently delicious after a couple of sips.

Smoky, surprising, a little bit mysterious—if that isn’t ‘Eridium’, I don’t know what that is. Hope you enjoy!
