Full Biotic Kick | Mass Effect

Square

Kick back and relax with a drink that could make a Krogan smile, featuring bourbon, ginger beer, an orange twist and ‘Tuchanka Dry’.

You’ll need

  • 1 oz (30ml) Wild Turkey bourbon
  • 1 oz (30ml) Gordons London Dry gin
  • Ginger beer to top
  • Orange twist

Add the bourbon and the gin to a mixing glass with ice. Stir thoroughly to chill. Fill a Collins glass with ice and strain the bourbon/gin mixture in. Top with ginger beer. Flame the orange and drop into the drink. Add a straw. Serve!

“You know, I had this idea for a drink, the Erotic Biotic…”

– James Vega

In the constantly raising stakes of the war with the Reapers, Mass Effect players have few opportunities to just kick back and relax. But when they do come, boy, are they raucous.

One such chance for levity is offered at the climax of the Citadel DLC in the form of a good old-fashioned piss-u—I mean, party, which you are expected to organise. Guests can include nearly every single party member you’ve played with since the very beginning, with one or two exceptions. With so many different personalities present, hilarity and tension ensues—liberally assisted with the application of that trans-species social lubricant, alcohol; cocktails included.

One of the many cocktails on offer at the party is the Full Biotic Kick, apparently a mixture of bourbon, ginger beer, an orange twist, and ‘Tuchanka Dry’. It isn’t immediately obvious what this last ingredient is, Tuchanka being the Krogan homeworld. It’s notoriously bereft of any plantlife that doesn’t try to eat you. Fruity liqueurs seem to be quite out of place there.

However, the name gives us a clue. While many alcohols are referred to as ‘sweet’ or ‘dry’, only one well-known type of booze has dry right in its title. London Dry, a style of gin made famous by my original homeland of the United Kingdom.

Combine the gin with the bourbon, ginger beer and a flamed orange twist (just for fun), you get a drink that is surprisingly good for a fictional beverage and, with a dash of Angostura Bitters and some lime juice, can also be formed into a well-known existing cocktail, the Suffering Bastard.

Hope you enjoy the Kick! Cheers!
