Time to learn a lesson in zombie-killing from your elders with this odd mix of beer, tea, lemon and bacon.
You’ll need
- Beer
- Snow chrysanthemum tea
- 0.25oz lemon juice
- Crispy bacon
Add the first 3 ingredients to a Collins glass filled with ice. Garnish with a bacon strip. Serve!
“Now listen here young man, Grandpa’s gonna tell you about the time he axe-kicked a Feral’s head right off…”
– Grandpa
The zombies of 7 Days to Die might be well beyond the ability to learn, adapt and overcome – but the survivors? They best learn on their feet – fast – or they’ll end up as deadite chow.
Enter Grandpa’s Learn’n Elixir, a brain-boosting in-game consumable with a curious ingredient list that includes beer (yay!), red tea (woo), acid (hmmm) and… dog food (what). All ingredients that exist in real life. So, of course, I put aside my dignity and decided to recreate it (almost) 1:1.
Try the Sigebrau from Dark Souls if you like beer-based video game cocktails.
Beer was easy. I chose to use the appropriately named Beer from Garage Project, but you can use a light IPA instead, if you like. For the acid, we use lemon juice, and for the red tea, snow chrysanthemum tea, following the in-game description of it being a ‘Chinese secret’.
And then we come to the dog food.
As much as I’d like to choke down some jellied horse meat on camera, I still retain some of the dignity – and I suspect you curious viewers and readers would rather have a recipe that at least vaguely tasted okay. So I used bacon instead, retaining at least a little of the spirit of the main drink.
Overall, Grandpa’s Learn’n Elixir tastes vaguely like a shandy, though a lot more floral from the addition of the red tea instead of lemonade. The lemon juice brightens everything up, and the bacon? Well, it doesn’t really do much except act as a garnish, to be honest. Feel free to omit it if you like.
The drink might not help me gain levels, but it’s been a learning experience in just how far I’m willing to go to recreate accurate drink recipes. Cheers!
