If you’re heading into a radioactive wasteland, you’ll need this green concoction of vodka, midori, lemon juice and a pastis rinse.
You’ll need
- 1oz (30ml) vodka
- 1.5oz (45ml) Midori
- .50oz (15ml) lemon juice
- Tbsp pastis
Add the pastis to your vessel and swirl it around as a rinse. Discard the majority. Add your vodka, Midori and lemon juice to a shaker filled with ice and shake thoroughly. Strain into your vessel. Garnish with a syringe and a lemon wheel. Serve!
“No green stuff for you this month!”
– Novosibirsk pump foreman to a disgruntled worker.
Protection from radiation is a pretty big deal in a country devastated by nuclear fire. For most in the Metro, it’s hazmat suits and masks, but for the people of Novosibisk, it’s Radioprotector AKA ‘The Green Stuff’. As you can imagine, it’s important stuff—people killed and died over it just a short while into the Russian apocalypse.
But with this recipe, you don’t have to wait for the inevitable oncoming nuclear war to enjoy it—and you won’t need to go begging to OSKOM either.

To call this cocktail ‘Green Stuff’ from Metro, it had to be three things: Russian, green, and slightly medicinal. Otherwise it wouldn’t be quite right.
The Russian was easy. We use vodka as our base spirit, preferably a Russian brand, but to be fair most vodkas are very similar. This gives us a nice clean base to work on top of—vodka-based drinks can seem flat, but we’re adding some punch with our other ingredients.
The green is old faithful, Midori. That gives us a lovely fruity hit along with some sweetness, then we brighten it with the lemon juice. Make sure to shake hard to ensure it’s the Midori that comes through the most, rather than the sour lemon.
And then we have the medicinal: the pastis rinse. Without this, it’s a plain but serviceable Midori sour. With the rinse, it transforms completely, the subtle anise and licorice pairing exceptionally well with the fruit flavours.
Can’t say it’ll protect you from radiation, but it’ll make living in the metro a little more bearable at least. Spacebo!
