Nothing says “bedside manner” like a man armed with a rifle stabbing you with a big needle filled with adrenaline. Get back into the fray with this curious colour-changing cocktail inspired by the medics of Battlefield.
You’ll need:
- 2 oz (60ml) vodka
- 0.5 oz (15ml) lemon juice
- 1 oz (30ml) simple syrup
- Red cabbage juice*
Add the vodka, lemon and simple syrup to a shaker filled with ice. Shake vigorously until chilled. Strain into a cocktail glass. Inject the red cabbage juice and watch it begin to change colour. Serve!
“Stop whining, I’m sure they’ll grow back.”—Corporal Kristoff, infamous for his excellent bedside manner.
Whatever game I play, I’m playing a medic. Doesn’t matter if it’s called a cleric, a healer, a doctor; if it gets people back into the fight, I’m into it.
But while other support characters might ply their trade with spells, herbs or medkits, the Battlefield medic takes a slightly more old school approach: namely, chasing down their comrades and sticking them with a great big bloody needle.
Can’t fault them though, it does work. Many losses have been averted through that war crime of a medical device.
That’s why I decided to celebrate the Battlefield medic with a cocktail of their own; featuring a syringe (of course) and a special ingredient that changes colour when exposed to acid.
See, that’s what the red cabbage juice is all about. It starts out purple (in the syringe) and as you inject it into the beverage, it changes the whole thing to a bright red due to the acidity of the lemon.
Thankfully, it doesn’t make much of a difference to the overall beverage either—it simply adds a unique vegetably flavour that pairs surprisingly well with the cool clean vodka and acidic lemon.
Definitely a beverage that any true medic would reach for in times of trouble—especially if their teammates are turning out not to be quite as skilled as first envisioned… something’s gotta dull the pain after all.
Here’s to the medics among us. Cheers!
*Note: To make the red cabbage juice, simply chop up a handful of red cabbage and boil for about 20 minutes, or until the water changes colour. Allow to cool, then use as necessary.
