Adventurers, dungeon-delvers and spies alike reach for this gin-based potion when they need a little insight.
You’ll need
- 1 oz (30ml) gin
- 1 oz (30ml) sweet apricot brandy
- 1.5 oz (45ml) pineapple juice
- 0.5 oz (15ml) lime juice
Add all ingredients to a shaker filled with ice. Shake thoroughly to chill. Strain into your chosen vessel. Garnish with a lychee. Serve!
“An eyeball bobs in this yellowish liquid but vanishes when the potion is opened.”
– Player’s Handbook
Adventurers in Dungeons & Dragons struggle against many challenges. Traps, monsters, the ever-frustrating locked door; dungeoneers must expect the unexpected if they hope to get out with the loot and their lives. During my games, I’ve frequently wished that I had more information about what’s around the corner.
Short of a divination wizard or a cleric, you can get that kind of information in only two ways: a mirror on a stick, or a Potion of Clairvoyance.
Looking for a different kind of potion? Check out the Potion of Healing instead.
The idea of a Potion of Clairvoyance as a cocktail always struck me as an inherently gin-based drink. Gin is, in my opinion the most mystical base spirit; the kind of drink a magic user in the real world would sip on. Maybe it’s because of the alchemical infusion of the botanicals into the drink. Maybe it’s the gin snobbery. Who knows? Either way, gin is the go-to for magical drinks for me.
Combine this gin base with the in-game description of a yellow liquid with a bobbing eye, and I instantly go to pineapple juice for colour and flavour. Throw in a little apricot for some depth and some lime to brighten everything up, and you get a potion that might not help you scry, but it’ll certainly help calm your nerves after you escape from that Beholder with only 2 hitpoints left.
