Even Alexios and Kassandra need some downtime. When they’re not stabbing people to death and press-ganging people into their crew, they’d settle down with this Greek-inspired rummed-up red wine cocktail.
You’ll need:
- 1 oz white rum
- 3 oz Montepulciano D’Abruzzo (or any other dry Italian red wine)
- 1/2 oz lemon juice
- Splash ouzo
Add all ingredients to a shaker filled with ice. Shake briefly to chill. Wash a goblet with the ouzo, then discard. Strain into a goblet. Serve!
What kind of Odyssey would it be without a drink or two? Come on, limpdick, get it down you! – Homer, probably?
Here’s the funny thing about Ancient Greek wines: they weren’t very good. That’s not me trying to be rude, it was just a reality of the technology at the time.
Due to a lack of proper bottling, Greek wines would quickly develop a nasty vinegary flavour. Even Kassandra and Alexios would probably turn their noses up at that.
What’s worse is that even modern tech can’t tell us what Ancient Greek wines really tasted like, because the grapes that the Ancient Greeks would have used have died out, with the exception of a wine called retsina—but that’s a white wine and apparently tastes of pine.

The closest (probably) we’ve got to ancient Greek “black wines” are Italian vintages—so I went with one of those. The Ancient Romans and Ancient Greeks didn’t exactly get along, so this choice might be treason to some, but it’s the most authentic we can get without a time machine.
I leave you with the Spartan Kick; a rummed-up red wine cocktail inspired by the latest (and apparently greatest) of the Assassin’s Creed franchise; playing on the Ancient Greek love of wine alongside a touch of anise-y Ouzo for a fresh, modern Greek twist.
Yamas!
