Freeze Bomb | Horizon: Zero Dawn

Beat the heat and score some new crafting materials with this mint-and-rum cocktail that’ll send a shiver down your spine.

You’ll need

  • 1.5 oz (45ml) white rum
  • 1 oz (30ml) pineapple rum
  • .25 oz (15ml) blue curacao
  • 8-10 mint leaves
  • 2 dashes orange bitters

Add the mint leaves and white rum to a mixing glass. Muddle by pressing gently with a flat tool. Strain into a shaker filled with ice. Discard mint leaves. Add the rest of the ingredients. Shake thoroughly to chill. Strain into your chosen vessel. Garnish with mint and serve!

“Just be careful with Chillwater, Aloy. It’s a cold that burns deep. Useful, though, if you know how to use it.”

– Rost, to Aloy

In a world full of games that are primarily about getting stuck into the action as fast as possible, Horizon: Zero Dawn breaks the mold. Scrapping with an enormous robotic tiger creature is certainly fun, but there’s something very special about springing a Rube Goldberg machine of traps to surprise and weaken it first.

Freeze bombs are just part of your strategic arsenal and easily one of my favourite ways of picking a fight. Lock the enemy down and do extra damage when you switch to the deadlier weapons? Sends a shiver down my spine, every time.

Wondering what to do with all that blue curacao now that you’ve got a bottle? Try making the Extradimensional Invader from Stellaris next.

For a drinkable version of the Freeze Bomb, using mint and blue curacao was an easy choice: how else are you going to get a chilly flavour with a frosty colour? But we don’t stop there, throwing in a mix of tropical flavours with our rums and rounding out the drink with some bitters at the end. A fresh, fruity cocktail that would be perfect for a day by the pool.

If you’re feeling particularly extra, try adding a little liquid nitrogen to the mix. Be careful if you do this though; make sure the nitrogen completely dissolves before taking a sip, and always use a straw. You could give yourself serious frostbite if cold nitrogen touches your skin!
