Meatball | Don’t Starve

Square

Monsters, darkness, evil magic and the weather—but the biggest threat in Don’t Starve is your own stomach. Satiate your needs with this riff on a Bloody Mary.

You’ll need

  • 1 oz (30ml) bacon washed bourbon
  • 2 oz (60ml) V8
  • .75 oz (20ml) lime juice
  • .25 oz (10ml) red wine reduction
  • 2 dash Worcester sauce
  • Black pepper

Add all ingredients to a mixing glass filled with ice. Stir swiftly to chill. Strain into a tall glass. Garnish with all kinds of nonsense. Serve!

Balls of meat make me strong!

Don’t Starve: a game that has the main objective right there in the title. Get teleported somewhere weird, try to survive as long as you can, build a base and fight monsters, but most of all, don’t run out of grub.

Food, then, is a pretty important part of the game, and players have a whole cornucopia of vittles to choose from, though many of them aren’t easy to get a hold of until later in the game. Most new playthroughs will start with berry-foraging and the like, hoping to avoid running into anything that could make a meal of the player in turn.

There is, however, one particular recipe that lends itself to the early game: the Meatball. It’s easy to make, you can even use the otherwise-poisonous monster meat, and it satiates you pretty well for the resource cost.

Nearly every player, at some point in their game, will have made a Meatball or 12. So, when deciding on an item to get inspired by from Don’t Starve, it was clear to me what to recreate.

Just like in the game, the real life cocktail recipe features a meat ingredient (the bacon-washed bourbon) and 3 non-meat ingredients (tomatoes, celery and carrot in the V8).

Throw in some red wine reduction and some lime juice, and you turn an otherwise bland Bloody Mary riff into something a little more interesting.

Overall, it’s still a Bloody Mary at its heart, but backed with a little more oomph than it’s vodka-infused cousin. And, yes, before you ask, it is still definitely a potent hangover cure too—for when you spend a little too much time out in the dark without a torch.

I don’t like Bloody Marys, but I’m pretty fond of this. I hope you are too.
