Royal Jelly Balm | Grim Dawn

Square

Bind your wounds and prepare for another scrap with a regenerative infusion of honey, ginger, orange and gin.

You’ll need

  • 1.5 oz (45ml) 1919 gin
  • .50 oz (15ml) honey simple syrup
  • .50 oz (15ml) lemon juice
  • 2 dashes orange bitters
  • 1 oz (30ml) ginger beer

Add all ingredients except the ginger beer to a shaker filled with ice. Shake thoroughly to chill. Fine strain into your preferred vessel. Add the chilled ginger beer. Serve!

Royal Jelly Balm/Salve/Ointment is one of the handiest items you can craft in Grim Dawn. Not only does it give you a boost to your health regeneration, but it also improves any further healing you do through potions or spells (such as the Tonic of Healing).

That makes it incredibly useful for tough boss fights when a 25% increase to health regen could be the difference between a triumphant win or a painful loss.

This usefulness comes at a cost, however. You have to complete a quest first to even get the recipe, and the contents of that recipe includes the sometimes-tough-to-find royal jelly.

In our real-life recreation, I’ve made it easier to craft than it is in-game. It’s based on a classic cocktail known as the Bee’s Knees, but with a couple of additions: the bitters and the ginger beer.

The orange bitters makes the drink more aromatic, while the ginger beer pairs up with the honey to create what I like to think of as a very ‘healthy’ tasting drink. Ginger, honey and lemon drinks have always been part of a cold and flu remedy in my household, and it feels right that they should be a part of a cocktail named after a healing item too.

One last note on the gin choice: feel free to use Tanqueray or Gordon’s for this, but I do really enjoy 1919 gin for this one. It’s a New Zealand gin that uses manuka honey as part of its botanical infusion, which lends itself to Bee’s Knees variations like this beautifully.

It’s hard to find and you may have to fight for it (like the Royal Jelly itself), but it’s worth the effort. Whichever gin you choose, I hope you enjoy this recreation of an incredibly useful, life-giving item from Grim Dawn.

Cheers!
