Spitter Spatter | Left 4 Dead

Square

A drink so good, you’ll do a spit-take: tequila, lime, grapefruit, spice and cucumber combine to create the grossest-sounding drink I’ve ever made.

You’ll need

  • 1.5 oz (45ml) tequila blanco
  • .50 oz (15ml) spiced simple syrup
  • .75 oz (20ml) grapefruit juice
  • 5 slices cucumber
  • Tonic water

Muddle the cucumber slices in a rocks glass until moderately crushed. Add ice to rocks glass. Add the tequila, grapefruit juice and spiced simple syrup to a shaker filled with ice. Shake thoroughly to chill. Strain into the rocks glass and top with tonic water.

“Ugh, what ‘n the hell did that thing just do?!”

Left 4 Dead 2 took what I loved about the original game and just gave me more of it: more weapons, more maps, more characters, more zombies and, of course, more special infected.

The Spitter is one of these newly added special infected and is, in my opinion, one of the most irritating. Hunters might spring out of nowhere and down you for a few seconds and Chargers might split the party up, but there’s no special infected quite as good at area denial as the Spitter. In a game that is all about swiftly moving from one section of the map to another, that is a powerful ability.

It also really doesn’t help that the Spitter is incredibly gross with those hacking noises she makes before attacking. Yuck.

In making the Spitter Spatter, a drink inspired by this disgusting creature, I wanted to achieve a few things.

First, it had to look gross. Muddled cucumber gives it that lovely flemmy look and provides that distinctive green Spitter acid in-game is so known for.

Second, I wanted it to be fairly acidic, almost caustic. I couldn’t just dump a bunch of grapefruit juice in there though, as it’d quickly become unpalatable. Combing it with the spiced simple gives us a sweet/sour combo that still has a bite of acid emphasised with some spice.

Lastly, I wanted the drink to be able to glow. It’s a defining feature of Spitter acid, after all, so we top up the drink with quinine-infused tonic water which glows under a blacklight. Damn cool party trick to bust out, just FYI.

Hope you guys enjoy!
